Past victim of childhood abuse: John McCain was subjected to horrific tortures and this has not precluded him from running for president of the United States. Nelson Mandela. The difference only shows in what and who they are today (more precisely how they acted afterwards - upon release etc). John McCain may still hold a desire to seek revenge of those who harmed him (many references re bombing etc). Nelson Mandela - Nobel Peace prize.
